I WATCHED the proceedings on the vote of no confidence on NBC TV last Friday and was most impressed with Morobe Governor Kelly Naru’s speech, which addressed the motion and the reasons why he did not support it.
In my opinion that out of all speeches made so far in this the 9th Parliament, Naru’s stands out as the most eloquent and well researched.
Well done and congratulations, governor, you made many of us Morobeans proud.
The governor, as a parliamentarian, and all other MPs have the sacred and noble duty to protect the constitution and to maintain the integrity of parliament. His speech did both.
Consultation and thoughtfulness more than 40 years ago means that PNG is now one of the oldest unbroken constitutional democracies in the world.
While all former colonies put together by a constitution have lasted as a country at an average of seven years, PNG has outlived all of them to 40 years.
We are the envy of the democratic world for we have also proven that 800 different groups could remain one country for 40 years.
As the first debater after the motion was introduced, Naru said it all and was appropriate that it should come first.
I also support the governor’s views and that of the speaker on a reference on how far can the courts interfere with Parliament given the principle of separation of powers in the constitution.
