A survey for Wasu Station in the Tewae-Siassi district to identify State land for a growth centre has been completed.
Tewae-Siassi MP Kobby Bomario said the survey was done by Morobe Lands officers to identify State and customary land.
It also identified settlers who have encroached on State land with the intention to live there and claim ownership.
Bomario said Wasu was among Gagidu, Umi, Wau-Bulolo and Morobe that would be developed into growth centres to link Morobe with various districts in neighbouring provinces.
Morobe’s neighbouring provinces are Eastern Highlands, Madang, West New Britain, Northern, Central and Gulf.
“Wasu Government Station is a T-junction location, strategically located to link New Guinea Islands with mainland to cater for domestic container and cargo processing facilities,” Bomario said.
Wasu has over the years been providing basic services to the interior Kabwum people in Komba, Selepet, Deyamos and Yus.
The Siassi Islanders, Sialum, Saidor and Long Island in Raicoast, Madang and parts of West Britain were also accessing basic services from Wasu.
Bomario said that most domestic vessels travelling to and from New Guinea Islands came through Wasu, likewise the overseas container ship that passed through Vitiaz Strait.
Wasu also had potential in fisheries and tourism along its coastline fringes towards Raicoast in Madang.
Bomario said there were other changes that would be conducted in realigning the wharf area, police station and market besides electricity, water and sanitation.
“We will ensure basics on the ground are prepared to ensure the growth centre to thrive in line with the provincial government plan to build growth and service centres” Bomario said.
