POLICE officers have been deployed to Aitape to investigate allegations of the killing of a man by local police officers, West Sepik police commander Chief Insp Moses Ibsagi says.
“I have deployed 12 members of the mobile squad from Vanimo to contain a tense situation after the deceased’s relatives demanded an investigation into the killing after police shot him when he was escaping from the police station,”he said.
Chief Insp Ibsagi said yesterday that a retired public servant from Nuku was knifed and killed by suspects during a fight in Aitape on Friday.
“Police then went and apprehended a suspect and detained him at the police station while the rest of the suspects fled,” he said.
“However, the suspect then escaped from the police station and was allegedly shot by police.
“He was taken to the Raihu health centre and died there.”
Relatives of the deceased then protested demanding an investigation into the killing.
“I have deployed members of the mobile squad to contain the tense situation,” Chief Insp Ibsagi said.
“Detectives from Vanimo will be deployed by tomorrow to conduct an independent investigation in to this.”
