For 24 year old AFL contract player Stanislau Susuve, pictured,  he is keeping his options open with his favoured rugby union.

Currently off contract from Gold Coast-based Coolangatta Football Club – Susuve has had a four week roller coaster ride with rugby sevens with the SLS Cowboys of Gerehu.

The powerfully built Susuve from the Gulf Province was baptized in his first provincial tournament at the Kimbe Invitational Sevens last month, and then came out of the wood-work to be awarded the player of the tournament at last weekend’s Brother 40th Anniversary tournament in Port Moresby. The meteoric rise of the virtual unknown from the Spartans club who has exploded onto the sevens scene, has now been rewarded for his efforts with his selection in the Capital Rugby Union (CRU) Team One squad to play in the National Provincial Championships this weekend.

Susuve was a feature performer for the Cowboys that eventually went down to hot favourites Kimbe Rebels 36-10 in the Cup final on Sunday.

He mixed with the best and found himself to be more than capable. Going by his performance against some of the top players in the country, Susuve’s name has been thrown around his peers as a hot potential PNG Sevens candidate.

The man from Gulf and Manus Provinces now has to juggle between his favorite sport and rugby union.

Rugby does not pay the bills, but with a pending AFL contract still in the air, he is going to make the most of the opportunity to get a look in.

He gave credit to the much more experienced Rebels for a well deserved win and added he was privileged to play against the best in the likes of Albert Levi jnr and Henry Liliket to name a few.

“I am keeping my options open if I get a chance to go to the next level,” Susuve said after the Cup final.
