SWIMMER Leonard Kalate, pictured, rounded off the 50m breaststroke with a time of 31.45 seconds at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In his second and final event, Kalate came second last against Guyana, Liechtenstein, Hong Kong, Jordan, Algeria, Gambia and Turkey, with Gambia disqualified, leaving seven countries in heat one.
Kalate said he had learned a lot from competing at the games.
“I’ve learnt a lot about myself as a swimmer and that’s all thanks to my coach Ashley Seeto.
“Now what’s left to do is go back home and just get better.
“I’m very proud of my fellow athletes Natalie Mok and Terrence Coleman.
“I’d like to thank everyone back home who have showed their support. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing everyone is behind you.”
Present to support Kalate were PNG Olympic Committee general secretary Auvita Rapilla, Team PNG general manager Lua Rikis and chief medical officer Matthew Natusch.
Chef de mission Karo Lelai said it was crucial for the athletes to learn from international events.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our young athletes to grow by using the games and the level of competition to raise the bar and challenge themselves,” she said.
“it should not always be about the medals but self-improvement.”
