GAZELLE MP Malakai Tabar says he will assist landowners tap into the vast Toriu River in the inland Baining area of East New Britain for alternate power supply for the province.

Tabar said the river had the potential to supply hydro-electricity for the province.

“This is the head of the biggest river in the whole of the New Britain Island starting from Gloucester to Menobonbon and Karu,” he said.

“This is a good river to generate power and will be our foundation to develop the electorate.”

Tabar, who joined the National Alliance Party in the government last week, said the hydro-power initiative was his responsibility.

Meanwhile, Tabar said he had supported his former party leader and Rabaul MP Dr Allan Marat in the Opposition but received nothing from the national government in the past eight months.

His defection to the government ranks was based on a mutual understanding with Marat.

“It would be fruitless to continue to be part of a system that does not support you financially, so any right thinking person, any sane thinking person would obviously go to where resources are available to continue work otherwise it’s no use,” Tabar said of his defection to the government ranks.

And as a member of the constitutional law reform commission, Tabar confirmed that significant amendments to the Criminal Code laws would be tabled in Parliament this week.
