Tackling police brutality

Letters

I AM sick and tired of police brutality and abuse so much so that it makes me want to vomit.
The people of Papua New Guinea has lost confidence in the RPNGC.
I do not feel safe to walk the streets or drive around at night anymore.
Not because of criminals or rascals, but rather, of the police.
The people of PNG and Port Moresby are already distressed and disgusted with behaviour of police.
Enough is enough.
If you are not competent to do your job in apprehending notorious criminals, who are still on the run, please stop abusing the rest of us.
We are tired of seeing our sons and brothers beings shot for no reason, our fathers losing their teeth after being hit with the butt of a gun, our communities burnt down, our sisters raped and our children being sold cocaine and illegal substances inside police barracks.
Our hard working tax payers are continuously being robbed, threatened and abused.
What is happening to the RPNGC?
The “infected blue mosquitoes” (rogue police officers) need to be exterminated completely before they infect the good ones and destroy our homes and the rest of us.
We need to work together in fighting corruption starting with the very institution that is supposed to enforce the law.
As a lawyer and a citizen, I have made a commitment to dedicate my time and resource to help and assist victims of police brutality in assisting them to write to the relevant authorities and help them get legal assistance.
If you feel that you’re a victim, send an email to [email protected] with the following information:
l Identity of the officer: Members of the Constabulary would normally have a name tag on their uniforms.
If they don’t have any visible form of identification then ask for their names.
If they refuse then take note of their features and make sure you can identify them later when required to.
If you can discretely photograph them with your mobile telephone that will help;
l vehiced used: Take note of the registration, make, model, colour and other features of the vehicle they are driving.
If you can, take a picture of their vehicle as well; and,
l Get reports: immediately after the encounter, you should write down your complaint. Get witnesses to also make their statements.
If you were assaulted during your encounter with police, get a medical report of your injuries and take pictures as well.
If property has been damaged, then photograph those as well and get a professional opinion on the cost of damages to your property.
It is time we eradicate corruption completely.
I challenge you to play your part to fight corruption that is destroying our nation.
A website will be launched in the coming days.
