THE Takuru Fours bowls tournament starts tomorrow at the PNG Defence Force Bowling Club at Murray Barracks.
Reigning champions Goroka return to defend the title.
This tournament is in honour of the founding president of PNGDF Bowling Club Ezekiel Takuru in 1997.
Twelve-year-old Patrick Allan Boino and his team will be out on the greens to prove a point or two as they take on the big guns.
Boino, a Grade 5 student at the Sacred Heart Primary School, Hohola, and of mixed Oro, New Ireland and Morobe parentage has been involved with the sport for 18 months and hopes to do well.
With prize pool of K6000 for the champions — an increase of K2000 from last year’s tournament.
PNG Defence Force Bowls Club president Joseph Kamane said Gorroka, Lae, Bulolo, Mt Hagen and Madang bowls clubs would be represented along with fellow Moresby club Metro.
“We increased the cash prize with the support of major sponsor Commercial Support Programme, a business arm of PNGDF for the cash prizes,” Kamanae said.
CSP’s Major Raphael Emolle added that his unit was proud to support bowls as it was a sport that engendered many positive values.
“This is a good initiative and we have an obligation to bowls because it is a sport played by many of our senior officers and youth as well,” Emolle said.
