HUNDREDS of people in East New Britain yesterday came together to mourn the death of Kokopo MP Patrick Tammur.
Tammur, 43, from Ulagunan village in Kokopo, died last week after a long battle with diabetes.
His body was received at the Tokua airport by a crowd of relatives, supporters, government officials, businessmen and friends.
His casket was then escorted in a long convoy of cars to the Kokopo Secondary School for public viewing.
His funeral service was conducted by the ENB provincial government provincial administrator Akuila Tubal.
Tubal said Tammur’s death was a great loss to Kokopo and ENB and urged leaders to put aside their differences and work together.
“His death is also a reminder that we are not immortals,” Tubal said.
He said the administration would ensure that the district was well managed until fresh elections were held.
ENB Governor Leo Dion said Tammur’s great achievements in the province and the country should be a reason to celebrate.
He said Tammur had so much to offer to the province as he had the vision to deliver services to the people.
He said Tammur was a good and promising leader although he was surrounded by “some people who had different ideas and schemes”.
Angoram MP Arthur Somare who was in the province to hand over the body to Tammur’s family said his achievements would be remembered at all levels as his commitment and achievements in the Information Communication Technology policy has made life easier for everyone.
