DESPITE no club matches this year due to Covid-19, Tatana edged Mahuru 3-2 in the Bank South Pacific Under-21 National Volleyball Championship final in Port Moresby on Sunday.
After drawing two sets apiece at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre, Tatana — led by Mahuta Daera and Geno Arua — were able to win 15-13 in the rally set and walk away with the title.
Tatana coach Igo Raho told The National that his men had proved themselves against some of the toughest sides in the country.
“We didn’t have a chance to play in the Tatana Volleyball Association competition this year because of Covid-19,” he said.
“But we managed to gather all our top players for the championship and this is a very special win for us.
“We came with the intention of giving our opponents a run for their money as we knew that there would be some great teams.
“We gave it our best and were able to get the win we were hoping for against the men from Mahuru.
“We’re all happy and our people back home at Tatana are very happy for our juniors.
“It’s all about working together and getting the small things right, and we have shown that we can do it.
“We will now go back and take part in our competition before the festive period.
“This is to make sure that all our players are kept busy.”
