TREASURY has paid K358,000 to the Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Kundiawa General Hospital in Chimbu for the goods and services tax required to clear two pieces of medical equipment at Lae Port.
They include a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine and a Computed Tomography (CT) machine imported from Dubai.
Hospital CEO Dr Harry Poka said the machines arrived and were awaiting clearance from the Lae Port. The tax has to be paid before the machines can be transported by road to the hospital in Chimbu.
“We are very thankful that our Deputy Prime Minister and the Treasury Department are coming to our aid,” he said.
Dr Poka said biomedical engineers from the manufacturing company as well as experts from Egypt were already in Kundiawa preparing to install the machines.
“We are looking at transporting the equipment to Chimbu sometime this week.”
