Teacher blames dept for salary foul play

AN elementary school teacher in Imbonggu, Southern Highlands, who has not been paid his correct salary since 2010, is blaming foul play at the salaries section of the Department of Education.
Alex Tui was commended by his elementary school trainer and inspector as “highly committed and has 100 per cent progress rate” but is paid on the same rate when he started in 2005.
He is currently teaching at Hos Elementary School outside Mendi.
Tui said he had tried unsuccessfully in the past six years to get his salary increment adjusted like other teachers.
He said in 2010 there was a salary increase for elementary teachers from K270 to K550 per fortnight, but since then he has not seen any increase in his pay packet.
“Every year, at least twice, I follow up with my trainer-inspector and provincial elementary coordinator but I’ve not been getting anywhere,” Tui said.
“I’m from the 2005 intake of elementary teachers and have since done my best to follow all that I was expected to do and believe I’ve been treated unfairly by the system.
“I’ve spent K2000 to have my pay adjusted and increased.”
Tui said he has done all he could possibly do, but nothing seemed to work so decided to go public.
“Mine is a genuine case and I pray responsible officers will attend to my six-year struggle.”
