THE Pacific in Union facilitated a one-day coaching refresher course yesterday at St Joseph’s International Catholic School.

Conducting the course was Papua New Guinea Rugby Union operations manager Sailosi Druma with the help of PiU in-counrty manager Paul Joseph and regional development officer Douglas Guise.

The course was to equip the teachers with basic knowledge of rugby union needed to implement back in their schools to students who will be taking part.

Twenty-two participants took part in the coaching course including teachers from respective schools in the nation’s capital – Kopkop College, Badihagwa Secondary, Gerehu Primary, Boroko Primary, Gordon’s International, Temis International and all-girl school Marianville Secondary.

The refresher coaching course covered theory and practical aspects.

The theory part of the course consisted of the basics of scrumaging, tackling, ruck and mauls, line-outs, while the practical part was just the implementing the theory part.

St Joseph’s International School sports head teacher John Agovai said the turnout showed how committed these teachers would be towards gearing their students up for their respective inter-school rugby festivals set for mid term two.

“I’m confident that the teachers will go back and implement what we’ve learnt so far from these refresher courses,” Agovai said.

The PiU is an AusAid funded programme.
