Teachers: We are being robbed

Highlands, Normal

TEACHERS in Western Highlands have raised concern over pay discrepancies in the past few fortnights.
A teachers college principal has claimed that “illegal and unauthorised deductions” were made to his pay last week.
Other teachers in the province had also complained that deductions were made to their pay last week without their consent.
Melanesia Nazarene Teachers College principal Michael Homingu claimed that a total of K106.15 had been illegally deducted from his pay on Nov 3.
He said the balance had been paid to the Teachers Association Loans, a body in which he did not owe anything to.
He called on relevant authorities such as the Highlands regional Teaching Service Commission to address the issue and make sure the deducted amount was reimbursed into his bank account.
Other teachers in the province, when contacted, said that such unauthorised deductions had become a norm.
They said such deductions often happened towards the end of the school year and was not sorted out on time.
In other cases, they claimed   the money was not reimbursed.
The teachers called on the authorities responsible to look into the matter and make sure that such problems did not occur.
They said given the role they played, they did not deserve this kind of  treatment.
