CRICKET PNG national selectors have announced a 14-man PNG Hebou Barramundis squad for the inaugural Queensland Rail Bulls Masters T20 Country Challenge in Bundaberg this weekend.
The challenge will feature seven regional teams from across the state as well and will be split in two pools.
The Northern Conference pool comprise Far North Fusion, North Queensland Monsoons, Central Queensland Seamers and Mackay/Whitsundays Nitros and the Southern Conference will consist of the PNG Hebou Barramundis, Wide Bay Flames, Darling Downs Suns and the South East Queensland Stormers.
It will be a round-robin tournament with the Northern Conference to be held at Harrup Park, Mackay and the Southern Conference will be played at Salter Oval, Bundaberg.
The winners of the Northern and Southern conference will get the opportunity to play at the famous “Gabba” as the curtain-raiser to the Brisbane Heat’s T20 clash against the Perth Scorchers on Dec 18.
The squad is made up of the core group that recently competed in the successful Air Niugini Supa Series in July with the inclusion of some of the Under 19 Hebou Garamuts players who performed well at the U19 World Cup
With regular captain Rarua Dikana not available once again, the selectors have named Chris Amini to lead the Hebou Barramundis, with Jack Vare being his deputy for this series.
The Hebou Barramundis will be leaving tomorrow to meet up with coach Peter Anderson, Chad Soper and Chris Kent and will travel to Bundaberg where they will have two days of training before the first game on Saturday.
“We are now looking to the future. We have brought in six U19 Garamuts players that performed well in Australia last month in the U19 World Cup,” high performance manager  Rarua Dikana said.
“There’s a lot at stake here for the players. If a couple of our guys can play extremely well, they could be on their way to play with the Brisbane Heat in the KFC Big Bash League 2.
