TEAM Papua New Guinea described their Olympic experience in Japan as a different one compared with previous editions due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Team PNG long jumper Rellie Kaputin said the pandemic had caused drastic changes to their preparations and competitions during the Games.
“Due to the pandemic, these Games were different to the others,” she said.
“Our training schedules were disturbed, competitions were cancelled and, at times, we competed in near-empty stadiums.
“We were restricted to only the Games villages and our competition venues.
“We could not watch and cheer on our teammates.
“But we got to compete against the world’s best athletes and I’m proud to say that we did our best.”
Meanwhile, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee secretary-general Auvita Rapilla said despite the challenges, the experience was invaluable.
“It is always a challenge for us to get the team ready,” she said.
“I know that the experience our athletes have gained has fuelled that passion to continue striving for greater heights.
“The new Olympic motto of faster, higher and stronger together reflects the importance of always trying to improve and achieve your best.
“The efforts of our athletes not only at the Games but during training and competitions leading up to the Olympics reflects their commitment to the Olympic motto and it is every bit valuable than a medal.”
