Team PNG giving their best against top athletes

Following the Youth Olympic Games opening ceremony in Argentina on Oct 6, swimmer Leonard Kalate was the first athlete to compete for Papua New Guinea.
He took to the water on Oct 7 and was impressive with a personal best of 1.07.32 in the 100m breaststroke, beating his previous time of 1.07.28.
That was followed up by a time of 31.45 in the 100m breaststroke on Thursday.
Kalate and golfers Natalie Mok and Terence Coleman are representing PNG at the games.
Both both golfers have completed their rounds in the individual stroke event.
Mok and Coleman did their best and will now turn their focus to the mixed team event, which they will join forces to compete in today.
The team is headed by chef de mission Karo Lelai, general manager Lua Rikis and young change maker James Leia.
Apart from the exciting atmosphere of the games, PNG is represented on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) administration where discussions are held among representatives from all over the world.
Lelai, Rikis, PNG Olympic Committee general secretary Auvita Rapilla and her deputy Andrew Lepani attended the Olympism in Action Forum from Oct 5-6.
The main focus of the forum was on the future of sports itself.
Rapilla, who is an IOC member, also attend the 133rd IOC session which was held in Buenos Aires from Oct 8-9.
It was at this session that Dakar, Senegal, was chosen as the hosts for the next games in 2022.
Rapilla said apart from the games, the forum and related meetings were a great opportunity for Team PNG’s leaders to be part of high level discussions about sports and development.
The games will close on Thursday.
Meanwhile, PNG Olympic Committee staff Chris Amini has left the country to participate in a United States Olympic Committee coaching enrichment programme in Colorado.
The programme will allow Amini to run his development and enhancement initiatives for PNG athletes.
