SIXTEEN cyclists in Lae rode more than 60km to promote cycling and involve teenagers and youths to help minimise peer-group influence, uncalled for behaviour involving drugs and alcohol abuse and domestic violence on their streets and communities.
The Kamkumung Cycling Team (KCT) started at Kamkumung, Taraka Street and made 65km to Kapa Kona Guest House, Yambo and Bukawa villages in the Labuta local level government area of Nawaeb on June 6.
KCT is part of the Kapa Kona Guest House and also aimed to promote tourism within the area and Morobe.
The team is made up of youths, boys and girls of all age groups, in the Kamkumung area, National Polytechnic Institute of Papua New Guinea and resident youths of Eriku’s Doyle Street.
KCT’s purpose and aim was to promote cycling to be a recognised sporting code in Morobe and the country, build confidence and endurance in bikers to have trust in themselves, encourage team-building and care for each other as a team.
They promote healthy living and personal fitness through fun cycling and team-building, encourage positive decision-making through selection of the right path to follow and a peaceful and friendly environment for families and communities to live together in.
Along the route the riders came across challenges such as river crossings, different weather patterns and tough track conditions heading to Bukawa, with a few young riders being first-timers.
Due to unpredictable weather and rivers to cross carrying their bikes, they clocked 10 hours for the route.
