POLLING in seven ward areas in Madang where polling was scheduled for Monday was deferred to yesterday because of insufficient ward rolls.
Provincial returning officer Justine Pantumari said wards four to 10 had more polling teams each and fewer ward rolls.
Pantumari said wards one, two and three polled on Monday. The others started yesterday.
Pantumari said Madang urban was scheduled to have a one-day polls for wards four to 10.
“We will see if there would be a need to extend to the next day for populated areas but otherwise we are expecting to begin counting tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Pantumari said Madang started off polling well but in a particular ward voters grew frustrated with the delay in making available sufficient copies of ward rolls and created some commotion.
Meanwhile, a candidate and his supporters in Madang urban beat up two voters in their ward area. after they alleged that the voters had planned to invite another candidate for a last-minute campaign.
Andrew Tounotuma said on Sunday a candidate and his supporters approached another candidate and wanted to attack him.
Tounotuma said he wanted to stop them but got hit in the face with a walking stick and when he wanted to fight back, the candidate came from the back and landed a blow on him.
“I never reported the matter to police but hope the candidate feels in his heart that he had just assaulted a voter,” he said.
Meanwhile, community leaders were urged to control polling in their respective ward areas.
