TEAMS Black and Purple registered wins in round five of the Nese Koupa Volleyball Association women’s division in Hanuabada village, National Capital District, on Saturday.
Black got off to a slow start but hitters Theresa Mou and Filo Kevau delivered a strong performance to win 2-1 against Grey.
Grey started on the front foot to win the opening set with Igua Morea and Doreen Guba impressive up front.
But Black re-grouped and fought back to claim the second and third sets.
Purple bagged their first victory of the season against Yellow, winning 3-2 in a thrilling finish to the opening match.
Under the guidance of skipper Edith Naime, Purple managed to tie the match at 2-2 before taking out the game in the rally set.
Purple club president Ikupu Naime said his side’s win was a relief with the team slowly stepping up.
“Our team has been around for two years now and we’re slowly adapting to the standard of the games,” he said.
“We are fortunate to get this win.
“Competitions like this are good for communities in the village because it controls the activities and movement of youths during the weekend. We used to have people wandering around, consuming alcohol and making noise.
“But the competition has now stopped this type of behaviour with penalties and curfews so it’s encouraging.
“A lot of our players are unemployed so this keeps them busy during the weekend.”
