TEENAGER Judah Rimbu says he is looking forward to playing against his idol and Papua New Guinea playmaker Watson Boas when the Hela Wigmen meet the Rabaul Gurias at Kalabond tomorrow (2pm kick-off).
The 18-year-old playmaker was in Grade 7 at Port Moresby’s Waigani Primary School when Boas first burst onto the international scene in the 2015 Prime Minister’s 13 fixture against Australia.
The former national Under-16 representative told The National that halfback Boas had helped inspire him to pursue a career in rugby league.
“I can’t wait for the game because Boas has been my idol since 2015,” said Rimbu, who is from Rogoma village in Kagua, Southern Highlands.
“I’ve always admired his confidence and toughness when he represents PNG.
“For me to play against him would be a great experience and I am just excited for the challenge.
“Besides, it is an important game for us (Wigmen) as well and we want to put in a good performance and hopefully get a win against them (Gurias).
“The Gurias are a tough side with many talented players and it will be a great test for us.”
Meanwhile, Rimbu said he enjoyed playing alongside halfback Solomon Pokari.
“I only made my Digicel Cup debut this year and I lack experience at this level but playing alongside Pokari always gives me confidence,” he said.
“We communicate well on and off the field and I think it helps in our overall performance.
“I hope our pairing will be effective against the Gurias who will have the crowd behind them.”

  • A win in Kalabond is impossible at this time of competition level and stage when times are fighting for finals hopes. Wigmen need to step up in both defence, attack and ball handling skills and stamina. Gurias will be fielding a very strong defensive and attacking team. Otherwise, expecting another burial.
