SAI Bianeng, from Telefomin in West Sepik, spent most of the past eight years in bed, because of a kidney infection.
However, thanks to the intervention of a Chinese medical team, especially that of Dr Feng Wubing, Bianeng can now move around freely and enjoy life with his family and friends.
When Bianeng heard about the visit to PNG of the 13th China medical team, Bianeng left his sick bed and travelled by plane from Telefomin to Tabubil in Western.
He then connected to Port Moresby and ended up at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
From a K200 fee that he paid, Bianeng was scheduled for medical checks, diagnosis confirmation and surgical operation.
Urologist and head of the Chinese medical team Feng performed what was to become the first flexible ureteral lithotripsy in PNG.
Feng performed using the latest technology surgical procedures in two phases, called flexible ureteral lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithomy.
The first was done on Dec 18 and the second on Jan 22. Multiple kidney stones were removed from one of Bianeng’s kidneys.
Feng explained that the two medical procedures were standard surgical treatment for large kidney stones.
“These two similar surgical treatments are offered overseas and would have cost Sai between K30,000 and K60,000,” he said.
“However, Bianeng only paid K200 to undergo this life-saving procedure.” Bianeng read about the visit from the newspapers and paid for his own way to Port Moresby.
Bianeng was discharged from hospital last Saturday.
“China has been providing medical support to PNG for the past 21 years,” Feng said. “Each member of the China medical team is a volunteer, contributing to a health of the PNG people and the nation.
“What we do is the best evidence of the deepening friendship between China and PNG.”
