A 10-YEAR-OLD girl living with a disability was burnt to death on Wednesday in Mt Hagen after she was locked inside a house.
Megan Sonny, from Tambul in Western Highlands, was alone in the house, according to Samwai Paul, a relative who had gone to the nearby market after spending the day with her at home.
Paul said Sonny was disabled and spent her life inside the house and her relatives looked after her.
Her father Sonny Kaima was in Lae while the mother was in Tambul on Wednesday.
The home belonged to Kaima and was rented out to other people who lost everything in the fire.
“We have no idea what caused the fire. I was not far from the house,” Paul said.
“It started between 1pm and 2pm and the entire building was covered in flames.”
He said fire fighters from Mt Hagen who arrived later could not save the two-storey building.
Paul Ena said losing a family member and properties in a fire was heartbreaking.
“This is one of the very sad moments for the parents and relatives of Sonny Kaima,” he said.
Mt Hagen city ward seven community leader Kepsy Kiap said people must take precautions.
