There is a need for speed in the WNSL: Wadunah

THE pace of the Women’s National Soccer League needs to be faster for Papua New Guinea to have a chance to qualify for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup, says Tusbab Laidamon coach Rachel Wadunah.
Wadunah, who has also served as head coach of PNG’s Under-19 women’s team in 2019, said it was up to all 14 teams and their coaches to raise the level of competition moving forward.
“For women’s football, the pace is still slow,” she told The National.
“We need to work hard to bring that level up to where some of the bigger countries in the Asia and Oceania are at.
“From a coaching perspective, we have to work hard and make sure that the commitment at training is there so that there is progress.
“I know and have worked with most the coaches in the league.
“So I’ve told them that if we want to qualify for the World Cup, the pace needs to be a lot faster.
This is what I’ve been pushing my players to do in the league, given that the speed of the game is slow.
“It’s something that we’ve really work hard on.
“The girls need to be fit to play the remaining games and we will continue to train.
“I’d like to see that they improve their fitness.”
She said PNG will have a chance of competing against the bigger countries when the pace becomes faster.
