THERE is no room for unruly behaviour in tournaments as sports are meant to be trouble-free, fun and family oriented, according to Wawens Cup patron Andrew Namuesh.
He said that at the end of the seventh edition of Lae’s biggest offseason soccer tournament at Lae Football Association (LFA) Park where Bismarck beat B-Tech 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Sunday’s men’s final.
Namuesh said good attitudes must prevail when such tournaments were held during the festive season instead of creating trouble while supporting teams.
He said apart from identifying talents for Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League club Morobe Wawens, the tournament was aimed at helping ensure a trouble-free festive period.
“No-one will spend money on tournaments if we have attitudes that create disorder during matches,” Namuesh said.
“But overall, I’m happy with the crowds from Bumbu, Tent City, Miles areas, Eriku, town and all the outstations that support the tournament.
Namuesh said the Wawens Cup did not belong to him or my family but to Morobe and Papua New Guinea.
“If you think this tournament is aimed at winning praise for me or my family, you are wrong,” he said.
“We are here to support Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu, Lae MP John Rosso and all our leaders in making Lae a better place.”
Namuesh acknowledged LFA president Roy Kamen and PNG Football Association’s Stanley Khanna for supporting the tournament.
Saonu said his government would continue to support Kumul National Soccer League franchises Morobe Wawens and Morobe United in the upcoming season.
“The Morobe government will support the franchises, whether it be one, two or the three clubs, that represent the province,” he said.
Meanwhile, Namuesh also acknowledged the district teams that competed in the tournament.
The teams are Bulolo’s Bee Stones, Markham’s G-Gingump, Kabwum’s Nayudos and Nawaeb’s Sila.
East Sepik team Panginia also competed in the Morobe tournament.
