POLICE have identified four suspects who were among a group of thieves that broke into the Air Niugini traffic office in Wewak last week.
Acting East Sepik provincial police commander Insp Charles Parinjo said their identities and locations were known to police and they would be rounded up and charged later in the week.
Police believed that the men, numbering more than five, took advantage of the absence of security at the Boram Airport tarmac area to gain access into the office and looted the airline’s properties last Thursday morning.
The thieves, armed with bush knives and guns, broke into the office and made off with important equipment required by the airline for its daily use including a computer, boarding passes and other office accessories.
Security guards from a local security firm were held up while the office was ransacked by members of the gang.
However, one of the guards managed to escape and sought assistance but all suspects had left the scene when reinforcement arrived.
Insp Parinjo said the security company was working closely with police to speed up investigations into the incident and urged members of the public to do likewise so that all alleged suspects could be apprehended.
The Air Niugini office in Wewak had also renewed its call for members of the public to help police by providing necessary information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects and safe return of the stolen items.
It said the stolen items were of no use to anyone including those who stole them or purchase any if they were being sold on the streets.
