LAE police reported three deaths over the Easter weekend as well as a man missing and feared dead after swimming at Voco Point, Lae Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban says.
The three deaths occurred at Centre Market (Back Road) and at 5-Mile respectively.
Kunyanban said a man from Undiapu village in Pangia, Southern Highlands, who resided at Banana Block, went missing and may have drowned at Vocopoint on Sunday afternoon.
The missing man is Kenneth Pia, in his mid-40s, married with four children and employed as a guard at KC-2 on Cassowary Road.
Pia was accompanied by a relative, Rex Taleka, when he went to the beach.
Voco Point police station commander Chief Sgt Brian Panda said Pia was the fourth person to go missing and feared drowned at the same location, however none of the bodies had been recovered.
Police and relatives as well as members of the community are currently searching the beachfronts along Voco Point, DCA and Aigris.
The Sipaia beachfront is currently closed to the public during state of emergency.
Meanwhile, Chief Insp Kunyanban said that a man from Yangoru, East Sepik, was killed at Centre Market, Back Road.
He said police were looking for the suspects and expected to make arrests soon.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said an argument had led to the death of the Yangoru man which then resulted in retaliation by the relatives and one of the suspects in the killing was injured and admitted to Angau Memorial Hospital.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said the other two deaths occurred at 5-Mile as a result of an ethnic clash between the Kaintiba and Menyamya people over vending space at a local market.

  • Be aware of shallower water shark at Voco Point if bodies are not discovered. This type of sharks swim in place like Voco Point because of the fresh water coming out from Markham River.
