Tigers continue perfect start to 2021 season

LAE Tigers continued their perfect Digicel Cup start with a 26-14 win over Waghi Tumbe in round two at the Lae Rugby League Ground in the Morobe capital on Sunday. With Tumbe fired up after their win over Rabaul Gurias in round one, it was a different ball game against the Tigers as the Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored side put on a strong defence against the visitors. The Tigers opened the scoring with a try to man of the match and second-rower Kitron Laka after he made a break. Last year’s Digicel Cup runners-up added their second try after hooker Jerry Teme created an opening to out send Casey Dickson over near the uprights. Joshua Lau added the extra two points for a 10-0 lead.  Teme was at it again as he sent lock Junior Rop for the Tigers’ third try of the match with Lau making no mistake to increase the lead to 16-0. However, having re-grouped, Tumbe five-eighth Saki Peter produced a cut-out pass for winger Jojo Kundala to score an unconverted and pull themselves back into the contest before halftime. Tumbe scored two late converted tries through Peter and interchange Jessey Matthew.
