Time for leaders to wake up

Letters

THE violence, deaths, arson and looting in Port Moresby on Jan 10 is a wake-up call for all the sleepy MPs in the National Capital District and Parliament to work together and introduce a bill or law to start removing settlements in the city.
Actually, all MPs must wake up from your sleepy slumber and start doing what is right to prevent any such disaster from ever happening again.
This call is long overdue.
The shameless looting of numerous shops in Port Moresby and razing of buildings are the work of unemployed people just squatting in the city.
Do your homework to study where people came from to loot the shops in Harbour City, Rainbow and East Boroko or elsewhere?
Where did those people come from to loot the shops?
It is very likely that they came from the many settlements in the suburbs where those shops are in.
These are the kind of people who cry for free handouts and free food and free everything.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop and the three MPs of NCD must wake up and do what is right to protect the city against vagrants who do not have anything to do in the city.
This event has painted a black spot on you, the MPs of the city.
Those people in the settlements must be sent back to their province of origin.
The settlements must be removed.
There are shacks and other forms of shelters constructed almost every week on the hills around Tokarara, Hohola and East Boroko on government land but the NCD Commission and its officers are turning a blind eye on all those illegal developments.
Other MPs who make their homes in the city must support this call to remove settlements in the city.
Port Moresby is the capital of PNG, not some government station in some remote district in Papua New Guinea.
Furthermore, MPs must be careful with what they say about the Jan 10 issue. MPs who try to blame the government for this sad event must not act like hypocrites. Some of you have been in Parliament for two terms now and have been supporting Prime Minister James Marape with his decisions since May 2019.
You cannot start making speeches as if you are innocent. You are part of this issue.
You never raised your voice when all sorts of frustrations and protests were made by teachers and other public servants when their pays were cut.
When the country was facing inflation and issues with power and water and Jet A1 fuel, you kept quiet and acted as if all was well.
You ought to wake up and do the right thing.
You, the MPs, have been sleeping for far too long.
Wake up and genuinely serve the hardworking people of PNG.
Wake up!

PNG Man
