PAPUA New Guinea considers China an important partner in trade and economics, Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko says.
Tkatchenko said when receiving US$350,000 (K1.2 million) in Coronavirus (Covid-19) assistance funding, that both countries would continue to support each other so that both economies could grow together.
It is understood part of the funding would be used to facilitate the country’s Covid-19 response and some would be used to send around 200 Papua New Guinean students for studies in China.
“Our Government from 1975 has always supported China’s ‘One China’ policy and we will continue to do that over the next five years.
“We see China as a very important economic partner in trade and in the economics of moving our country forward in this area,” he said.
Tkatchenko said PNG appreciated the Covid-19 assistance and the support for the 200 students who would study in China.
He said China was playing a role in building the country’s human resource and the Government was grateful for that gesture. Chinese Embassy charge d’affairs Chen Jiliazy said his country wanted to continue to strengthen PNG.
