Tokiwa Publishers Ltd (TPL) is ready to take on the challenge of publishing books written by Papua New Guineans.
It is a locally owned company that aims to produce reading material and other resources for students from elementary to primary school level as well as the general public.
Morobe education programme adviser Keith Jiram said he was satisfied that a PNG-owned company had taken up the challenge to produce reading material that is “written by Papua New Guineans for Papua New Guineans”.
“The stories, poems, posters and other materials produced will be something that children and teachers can relate to,” he said.
“Currently, a lot of the materials are produced overseas and those are things that foreign to PNG.”
Jiram was speaking at a workshop in Lae attended by TPL.
“We support the programme because we want more books published, especially reading materials.”
“We encourage more writing to support the National Department of Education in providing a variety of reading material for schools throughout the country.”
TPL managing director Francis Wagaia said he was happy to support education of PNG children through raising literacy and numeracy levels.
“We are investing to assist schools with support materials in local context and at affordable price, especially for rural and remote schools in the country,” he said.
“We plan to produce and publish a wide range of quality materials for the school population and the general public.
“This is what the company can do to support the Education Department and achieve its educational goals.” Acting manager Nicholas Liosi said they were going through the preparatory stage to help writers prepare manuscripts.
