JIWAKA provincial police commander Supt Simon Nigi was killed in a road accident on Monday morning.

Police said the vehicle he was driving went off the road near Sigiri mountain, Jiwaka.

An unidentified female passenger in the vehicle died later at the Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.

Highlands divisional police commander Teddy Tei said Nigi died instantly after the 10-seater vehicle ran off the road.

He said police were yet to establish the cause of the accident.

“We are yet to know what made him drive off the road,” he said.

He said it was a big loss to the Jiwaka province and the country’s police force.

Tei said Nigi was appointed police commander for the new province 18 months ago.

He described Nigi as well-disciplined with vast experience in policing.

Nigi had served as a police officer for more than 30 years in various provinces.

He served as provincial commander in Western, Southern Highlands and as police station commander in Lae and Kiunga as well as other provinces.

Tei said Nigi, from East Sepik province, was married with children and grandchildren.

His colleague Supt Martin Lakari from Western Highlands described Nigi as a hard working man.

“Nigi said little and did more to maintain order in the Jiwaka province and gradually change the province,” he said.

Tei said his body was taken to the Goroka funeral home from Mt Hagen hospital yesterday.
