A SENIOR police officer has condemned as bad for the image of the constabulary the escape of 31 people on remand at a police station after the officer on guard fell asleep.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Northern Command Peter Guinness said it was the first time “such a thing has happened”.
“As a young policeman serving (before) in Lae, I have never experienced such,” Guinness said.
The 31 on remand walked out of the Lae Central police station somewhere between 1am and 6am last Wednesday after getting the cell gate keys from the guard officer who had fallen off to sleep.
He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Those on remand took the keys from his pocket, opened the gate and walked out through the police station door.
“Whoever the policeman (who did) this thing has painted a very bad image of the constabulary especially the Lae police,” Guinness said.
Lae Met Supt Chris Kunyanban said the officer had been suspended.
ACP Guinness said the allegation that the cell guard had been drinking with juveniles in their cell was also bad for police ethics.
“After he is charged, there will be a recommendation that he will be terminated from the force as we have no space for such people,” he said.
He warned police officers to observe ethics, processes and procedures as members of a disciplined force.

  • Aiding prisoners to escape is a crime.
Charge him with 31 counts of aiding prisoner’s to escape.

  • You know sometime, I think that the ‘Royal’ insignia should be removed from the PNG Constabulary of today because that ‘Royal’ insignia/title was ‘earned’ by our forefathers of yesteryear. Our cops today don’t envy the pride of wearing the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary tag as coppers before.

  • It is a normal thing for police men & women to take alcohol and come to work, travel in the vehicle and bash up innocent person on the street so thats not a new thing. They have never been disciplined for doing such things as this so lets not waste time talking about it.

  • At least there should be two policemen on duty so that they are both monitoring each other.

  • This is impossible to officer gave alcohol to the juveniles and now officer on suspension.

That’s not right just terminate him from job right away.
