MOROBE police commander Supt Jacob Singura says the relevant authorities should consider banning all cheap alcohol in the country.
“We have seen and encountered situations where law and order issues arise as a result of consuming these cheap alcohol products that are on sale in shops now,” he said.
Singura said he had received petitions from women’s groups, schools and the community in Wau and also from the administration of the Hidden Valley mine, raising concern that the consumption of cheap alcohol had had a deleterious impact on the community.
“A lot of youths and school-ages children are now involved in consuming it (cheap alcohol),” he said.
“Very young children are involved in the consumption of this substance and it is a real concern now.”
Singura said as a result of this, many school-aged children missed classes or misbehaved in schools and were getting involved in committing offences.
“This is taking a toll on our younger generation and the best way forward now to save these future leaders is to do away with it,” he said.
“These cheap alcohol brands and products should be banned in the province as it is really the main cause of a lot of law and order problems that we have encountered.”
Singura said during the Christmas and New Year periods, the main cause of lawlessness reported were alcohol-related.
He said that was why police and relevant State agencies had to unite and take a stand against the production and sale of these cheap alcoholic products.
