BOUGAINVILLE police chief Deputy Police Commissioner Francis Tokura is calling on people producing and selling home brew to refrain from it and find other ways to sustain their living.
Tokura said in light of the increase in the consumption of the illicit liquor both consumers and producers should be held responsible.
He is therefore appealing to everyone to work together in the community to help minimise this activity.
He says addressing law and order issues was not only a police responsibility as people tended to think.
“We are appealing to everyone in the community like chiefs, church leaders, women and youth leaders and to help us address this.”
Tokura says with problems like logistics and manpower shortages facing the region’s police force,  they could not be everywhere at one time to deal with those engaged in the sale and consumption of home brew.
“If you see someone who is producing or consuming it, make it your business to at least talk to them about the negative impact it has.”
He appeals to producers of home brew to consider other avenues of making money like fishing, marketing or agricultural activities rather than engaging in an activity that was affecting the societies negatively.
Tokura says Bougainville is heading towards the referendum in 2019 so creating a peaceful society is everyone’s responsibility.
