TOURISM Promotion Authority chief executive Jerry Agus is happy with the Government’s Budget allocation of K50 million for the implementation of the Tourism Sustainable Development Project.
Agus said this was the largest funding under the development budget to the tourism sector so far.
“The K50 million appropriation to the tourism sector by the Government has been long overdue, despite past and present government’s preaching about the huge potential of tourism and what it can contribute to the economy,” he said.
“The decision by the Government is highly commendable and now presents us with the challenge to move the tourism sector forward going into 2019 and onwards.” Agus said the authority had already signed memoranda of understanding with provincial governments and district administrations.
“The timely allocation by the Government will go a long way in the implementation of these memoranda, mainly in the areas of product development and improvement of tourism facilities and basic infrastructure in key tourism attraction sites,” he said.
“PNG will also improve on its level of engagement and interventions in the areas of marketing and promotions to place PNG as one of the desired tourism destinations at the back of the massive destination awareness and promotions from the hosting of Apec 2018 meetings.”
