THE Dec 10-13 Southern Highlands Nines rugby league tournament is back to promote more raw talents at the Momei Oval in Mendi.
“Through this tournament, 15 of our boys were selected into the Mendi Muruks train-on squad but only five made the final cut,” tournament coordinator Nenga Nandape said.
“We’ll be inviting provincial teams to come and scout some of our upcoming talents during tournament.”
Nandape said with many social issues affecting young people in the province, they were using the code to give the youths an opportunity to do something worthwhile.
“This year, we are encouraging women’s teams to register and take part as well,” he said.
Team registration is K350 and will close on Nov 30.
Teams can contact tournament coordinators on 745 531 65 and 728 40 868 for more details.
“Teams from all over Highlands, Lae and Port Moresby have shown interest in taking part,” Nandape said. Teams are required to have 20 players with full medical checkups, have their own jersey sets and have no more than three Digicel Cup players in a side.
Nandape said teams must be able to provide their own transport, accommodation, meals and other necessities.
Nandape and his organisers thanked the Southern Highlands government, Governor William Powi and administrator Joseph Cajetan for their support.
