THE Southern Highlands Nines rugby league tournament kicked off at Mendi’s Momei Oval yesterday with 20 teams participating.
Tournament coordinator Menga Nandape told The National that provincial administrator Joseph Kajetan officiated the kick-of.
Nandape said 30 teams were initially confirmed but the number was trimmed down to 20 due to no proper team uniforms and registration issues.
“We have four women’s and 16 men’s teams, women are playing in one pool while men are playing in four pools,” he said.
“The attendance by fans was big.
“We didn’t charge any gate fees because we wanted to cater for more supporters.
“That’s what it is all about; more entertainment for the crowd.
“The competition will run through tomorrow (today) and Saturday with grand finals to be held on Sunday.”
Nandape said the Southern Highlands government, through Governor William Powi and administrator Kajetan, had sponsored the tournament.
He said the total prize money was more than K30,000.
“We thank the government for its support,” Nandape said.
“This is the perfect platform to showcase our talents in the province.
“Talents from neighbouring Western Highlands, Enga and Hela are showcasing their skills here too.
“The sponsors also have other operational costs and we are grateful to them.”
He said scouts of Digicel Cup teams and Enga Mioks assistant coach Andiki Andrew were seen at the tournament.
