KAVIENG town in New Ireland lacks the capacity to generate revenue to sustain its operations, Mayor Stanley Mansini says.
He said the town situated in the Kavieng Urban LLG was collecting revenue from sources as allowed by law.
“The LLG needs improvements in revenue collection, delivery of basic services and the general upkeep and cleanliness of Kavieng,” he said.
Mansini said the lack of funding was a major issue.
“The budgetary cut to us with regards to the Mining Royalties Grant and lately the 80 per cent cut on the LLG Service Improvement Programme Grants direct to LLGs has placed us in a touch financial situation,” he said.
This had a direct effect on the LLG 2016 budget.
Mansini said two main areas identified that would help boost their implementation of development plans were human resources and finance.
“The political climate in our province may have contributed in the stagnant situation we are in.”
