COMMUTERS on the Erima roundabout section of the Hubert Murray Highway, one of the most congested thoroughfares in Port Moresby, can now breathe a sigh of relief.

The congestion has been eased as contractor Dekenai Construction put the finishing touches to a four-lane road.

This area is notorious for never-ending queues of vehicles, especially in the mornings and evenings.

Dekenai workmen have been working 24/7 on it since the beginning of this month.

Supervisor Mark Wasi told The National yesterday, amid the hive of activity, that the onus was now on the National Capital District Commission to award a further contract to complete the stretch to 9-Mile.

“The stone fixings and kerbs at Erima are completed,” he said.

“We will clean, backfill and tidy up.  We will start ripping up the road to lay bitumen.

“By next week, we will look at extending the other side of the road.

“We are putting in road base, compacting it and pouring in hot mix.

“This work has taken us about three weeks to complete, except for some delays caused by rain.”

Wasi said he and his workmen felt a sense of satisfaction, as they knew  many people were affected by the road.

“Once we complete this, the problem area will be 8-Mile bridge and beyond.

“It is now up to the NCDC to allocate money for the 8-Mile to 9-Mile stretch.”
