THE Australian Federal Police (AFP) yesterday handed over the K750,000 refurbished National Capital District traffic police headquarters at Boroko to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) as part of its support for the Apec meeting.
Assistant Commissioner Bruce Giles of the Papua New Guinea-Australia policing partnership programme handed over the keys to Deputy Police Commissioner Jim Andrews.
Giles said the refurbishment was part of their agreement to support PNG in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit this year.
“The AFP in partnership with the RPNGC have been tasked to provide the safe movement of an estimated 21 world leaders attending the Apec summit,” he said.
Giles said the facility would be the operations base for motorcade movements during Apec.
“With up to 21 motorcades operating simultaneously during the Leaders Week, this facility will be pivotal in the success of the summit for the safe movement of our distinguished guests to Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Giles said the developed facility would not be for Apec only but for future operations of the traffic section.
Andrews thanked the Australian Federal Police for their assistance to the PNG Constabulary not only in Port Moresby but also other parts of the country.
Director Traffic Chief Superintendent Joe Joseph said the facility would be used for offices and storage space for motorbikes and vehicles.
