Police warn women after rape

POLICE have advised women and girls to walk in groups rather than on their own, and stay where there are people instead of isolated areas to avoid being assaulted.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou, pictured, gave the advice after a 19-year-old woman was raped by three men while she was taking a shortcut in an area near the Kumul Flyover Bridge, in Port Moresby. He said the woman was with her husband around noon on Friday, Jan 12, when they were confronted by three men armed with knives.
“They chased away the husband and raped the wife,” he said.
Police managed to catch one of the men after the husband reported the matter at the Saraga police station at 6-Mile.
N’Dranou warned women and girls to always take precautions and use the safest routes.
He thanked the police officers who arrested one of the men.
“This is not the first case that happened along that area,” N’Dranou said.
“A number of cases had happened in that same area.
“Women and girls living or walking along those areas need to take safety measures.”
