POLICE in the National Capital District are looking at strategies to help them reduce major crimes in the city.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou told The National that car thefts and armed hold-ups were currently leading the crimes tally in the city.
“We are currently looking at strategies that will help us to reduce the number of stolen vehicles to at least one per week,” he said.
He said they would also look at reducing the number of armed hold-ups to at least one a week and other offences like traffic and sexual offences to at least half of the numbers being reported.
N’Dranou said in terms of measures to deal with minor traffic offences and other related traffic issues, he would be meeting with the Land Transport Board and Road Safety Authority next week to come up with solutions for those persisting issues.
He added that for sexual offences, he was currently working on a strategy to involve the mainstream media to assist him with awareness to help stop the rise of sexual offences especially on minors.
He said they were still facing difficulties understanding the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (Nicta) and Cybercrime Act in order to deal with cases relating to them. N’Dranou said they had dealt with some cybercrime cases but not under the recently passed legislation.
He said despite the negatives like the lack of logistics, finance and lack of human resources, his command would be doing its best to fight crime and address lawlessness in Port Moresby.
