TWO vehicles collided — a direct result of traffic light failure — injuring several people in the North Waigani area in Port Moresby.
The accident occurred yesterday along the newly constructed Boulevard leading to Parliament.
According to police, the collision between a 25-seater PMV bus and a taxi injured several passengers – two critically.
First Constable Traffic Accident Squad Jerry Norum said the vehicles were travelling from different directions and quite quickly – the bus from the International Convention Centre and the taxi from Parliament side.
“The traffic lights being not on at that time confused the two drivers as both wanted to negotiate that intersection but ran into each other,” Norum said.
Passenger Paul Wan, told The National that two people were admitted to the Port Moresby General Hospital, one sustained a broken arm and the other a leg.
Norum said it was the second accident at the newly built road opened on the eve of Apec leaders’ meeting last month.
“Both drivers have already been taken to the police station for questioning.
“Though the traffic lights were not working, one should have allowed the other to pass through first in order to avoid this accident.”
Norum urged motorists to be mindful of the traffic light situation and slow down to avoid similar accidents.
