MANY traffic signs, including pedestrian crossings, in Lae city and its outskirts have been vandalised, destroyed, worn out or simply non-existent, causing confusion and serious inconvenience for motorists as well as the public, police say.
Assistant Comm of Police (ACP) Northern Peter Guinness said: “We experienced traffic accidents and some of them fatal, partly due to the state of the pedestrian crossings, traffic signs missing, destroyed or carelessness by drivers.
“Lae is always experiencing rainy periods.
“Drivers during these times must drive slowly and carefully as the roads are slippery.
“In addition to that, important traffic signs are not present or visible at some points as well as pedestrian crossings.”
He said an accident at Buimo Road junction, section of the Bumbu Road, on Tuesday came about because of carelessness.
ACP Guinness said at some areas of the road network in the city did not have pedestrian crossings where they once existed.
“Some drivers in the city are new, what is the guarantee that attention will be taken by them?
“Not only that, other drivers do not notice too.”
