CHIEF Justice Sir Gibbs Salika told 85 new trainee lawyers, who were sworn in at the Legal Training Institute yesterday, not to make money the reason for choosing the profession.
“One thing I want to warn you about is don’t think about money.
“If you are here just so that you can make lots of fast money, take that out of your thinking system because that could lead you to problems as well,” he said.
Sir Gibbs told the trainee lawyers that there were some lawyers languishing in prisons because they became lawyers with the intention of becoming rich.
He also warned them to always ensure that the rule of law was maintained.
“The rule of law is important. You don’t go breaking rules or breaking laws thinking that you’re a lawyer and you can defend yourself. Lawyers will think like that but they will end up in trouble,” he said.
Sir Gibbs congratulated the trainee lawyers for meeting the requirements to be accepted into LTI.
He told them they were privileged because there were some students who were dropped for not meeting the requirements.
He told them that they had learned the theory and now they would be doing practical. “This is a practical course which will teach you how to speak in court.”
