Trainees end public service course

THE Government is building capacity in the public service through the graduate development programme.
Personnel Management Secretary John Kali said the programme was initiated because the public service was
not performing due to ageing workforce and lack of new workers to replace them.
“When the population was increasing, the number of public servants who
were needed to provide the services remained stagnant,” he said last Friday during the graduation of 23 students who underwent a 12-month training programme.
This was the fifth graduation for the programme which started in 2008.
The aim was to train and develop university graduates to become career public servants.
“I appeal to all provincial and local level governments to undertake graduate development programmes and address leadership to encourage efficient and equal participation of the next generation,” Kali said.
He also praised stakeholders, including AusAID and the Justice Department among others, for their support.
Graduate Esther Sanghai said they graduated from different fields of work but they came together under the same batch to learn the basic functions of public service.
