COMPENSATION payments in the Highlands are becoming a common way to restore peace and harmony following differences, injuries, disputes, murders and tribal conflicts.

It is one way that can solve problems instead of people taking the law into their hands.

The Kumdi tribe of Mul–Baiyer, Western Highlands, paid compensation last Thursday for the death of two people who died at Daulo, Easterb Highlands, last August.

They  paid more than K200,000, 156 pigs, 31 cows, six cuscus, four crocodiles, three cassowaries, two goats and six pythons as compensation to the relatives of the two men killed in an accident last year.

Acting Highlands police divisional commander Martin Lakari, police personnel,  peace mediators and Kumdi tribe leader Mark Sepi attended the ceremony.
