MADANG Governor Peter Yama says the late Sir Peter Barter was not only an exemplary citizen but a great friend to all, including himself.
He recalled how the late Sir Peter helped him to start his company, Yama Security Services, at the back of his Madang Resort Hotel.
“I knew him when working as a policeman in Madang in the 1980s, provided security to his guests,” he said.
“He was an icon of Madang, I am at a loss of words.”
Sir Peter, 82, passed away at the Cairns Hospital, Australia, last week after a long illness.
He was the chairman of the Western Pacific University (WPU) council in Southern Highlands until his passing.
Staff and students at the WPU expressed their gratitude to Sir Peter Barter for his enormous services to the university and the country.
They recalled about how he drove up to the Highlands from Madang, stayed on campus and mingled with them.
“He always wished us well and supported us in his capacity as the council chairperson as well as an individual who was passionate about developing our tertiary education space,” they said.
