TRUKAI Industries Limited has used its 45th anniversary in Papua New Guinea to strengthen its foundation in the country through a host of community-based initiatives and investments.

A company statement said the company, during the year in which Agriculture and Livestock Minister Tommy Tomscoll instructed rice companies to invest in assisting farmers, Trukai announced plans to develop rice farming.

Its vision for Central was recognised by the Amadi-Baga Integrated Land Group, which in August gave a further 20 hectares to develop a rice farm in the Kairuku-Hiri district.

This followed eight months of hard work in piloting a rice project, from land preparation to harvesting.

“Contributing to wealth creation

in the rural sector is something we are passionate about,” chief executive Greg Worthington-Eyre said.

“This new chapter in our history is a big focus for Trukai as an organisation, and expanding the project in the future is the longer-term plan.”

Worthington-Eyre said agriculture would continue to be a focus for Trukai this year, as it pursued opportunities for farmers in other provinces such as West New Britain and Oro.
